Do I need a tourist visa for Ireland?
Not everyone needs a visa to travel to Ireland as a tourist. Citizens from the UK, Switzerland, EEA member states do not need an Irish tourist visa. On the other hand, citizens from China, Russia and Turkey do need an Irish tourist visa. It depends entirely on your country of citizenship.
You can find out for certain by checking the Immigration Service Delivery website.
You may also be exempt from needing a tourist visa if you are travelling under the British-Irish Visa scheme or the School Student Visa Waiver scheme.
How can I get a tourist visa for Ireland?
If you’re from a visa required country, you must apply for your tourist visa before you travel to Ireland. You must make the application from your home country, or a country in which you are a legal resident. Applications are made via the AVATS online application facility. You can complete the application yourself, or you can ask our immigration solicitors to do it for you.
Everyone who is travelling to Ireland must get a tourist visa, even if they are under the age of 18. Applications for minors must be completed by a parent or legal guardian.
What information do I need to provide?
You will need to provide the following documents when applying for an Irish tourist visa:
- An application summary sheet
- An application letter, explaining why you want to come to Ireland
- A complete vacation plan describing your dates of travel and accommodation, including your reservation confirmations
- A study plan (if applicable)
- Proof of medical or travel insurance (this does not have to be included in the application but may be requested by a Visa Officer)
- Proof you have paid the visa application fee
- Your current passport and a photocopy of each page from all previous passports (where available)
- Proof that you have enough money to support yourself financially during your stay in Ireland
- Evidence that you intend to return home
- Information on rejected Irish visas/preclearance applications, and details regarding any occasions you have been deported or refused entry to another country
Any documents that aren’t in English or Irish must be translated.
What happens next?
After you submit your application, it will be reviewed and a Visa Officer will decide whether to grant you a tourist visa. If your application is successful, you can travel to Ireland. However, the visa does not automatically provide you with permission to enter Ireland – this is up to the discretion of the immigration officer at the port of entry.
Once you enter Ireland on a tourist visa, you can remain in the country for up to 90 days. A tourist visa is a type of short stay C visa. It allows you to:
- Travel to Ireland as a tourist; and
- Study in Ireland in the short-term (meaning your course must be less than 90 days)
A tourist visa does not allow you to:
- Work, whether paid or unpaid
- Access publicly funded services, such as healthcare
What happens if your tourist visa application is rejected?
If your Irish tourist visa is rejected, you can appeal the decision within two months of the refusal letter. Or, you can submit a new application. You will be told why your tourist visa application was rejected.
